Challenges of August Pullman

August had a disease known as "Mandibulofacial Dysostosis." The disease comes when a p The virus only affected his face to extend that his face had a deformity. August has gone to the hospital for surgeries to solve the problem, and after the 27 different operations, his face got deformed.

Auggie has been home-schooled by his parents because of the medical facial deformity that he had during his birth. Being home-schooled has made August not to have his age-mates friends to socialize and play while at home. Life at home has become tedious for August.

Nearly the entire student body ostracizes August at Beecher Prep middle school. The students excluded August by not communicating with him and refusing to acknowledge his presence. Jack, Julian, and his friends are making fun of him behind his back. Jack mocks him by saying that he would kill himself if he looked like Auggie. Auggie gets numerous hate notes, and a class picture photoshopped.

August becomes sick, forcing her mother to abandon her mother-daughter day with Olivia to bring him home for treatment.

Wearing a Ghost Face mask and cloak while going to school becomes a big challenge for him. Their dog Daisy ruins the Boba Fett costume that he was planning to wear.

At the nature retreat, Auggie and jack are threatened by three of seventh graders from another school

How his social development stage amplifies the challenges

Beecher school as the August social development stage

August get ostracized by nearly the entire student body, and they refused to talk or associate with him. He gets frustrated by how the students were treating him. He becomes sick in school, and her mother abandons her mother-daughter day with Olivia to bring him home for treatment. His classmate's friends nickname him a ghost face, freak, which ends with a fight, and Jack was suspended.

Considering Erickson development stage August is moving through development in a positive way

Auggie's ego to education makes a significant contribution to progress as he had mastered ideas, attitudes, and skills at each stage of development. He becomes successful and contributes positively to both school and at home. It is evident at the end of year graduation, where he is given the Henry Ward Beecher Medal for standing out among his classmates. Auggie successfully overcomes psychological conflict at each of Erickson's eight stages, where he ceases using his mask and gets to make more and more friends in school.

Role of August's family in the course of his development

August's parents tried their level best and took their child to the hospital to have surgeries. They thought that the disease could heal and august could be well. Isabel and Nate homeschooled August at his early stage of development because they were protecting their child from stigmatization.

Her mother, Isabela, abandon her mother-daughter day with Olivia to bring him home for treatment. Olivia also convinces Auggie to go for therapy with her after the rejection by her own former best friend, Miranda.

When August was a little bit mature as he approaches fifth grade, his parents enrolled him in Beecher Prep, a private middle school. This help August develop socially with friends and also help him grow into an educated boy.

Auggie's mother attends the end year graduation where Auggie is given the Henry Ward Beecher Medal for standing out among his classmates. Her mother encourages him and tells him that he is a wonder.

August family are helpful

By enrolling him in Beecher Prep, private middle school shows that they are caring and loving parents who know the importance of education. The parents wanted him to experience the outside world, get ideas, to get new friends, knowledge, and skills, and also get a professional career.
